Heavy crude production in Iran’s flooded West Karun oil fields has dropped by about 10,000 b/d to 20,000 b/d, the state-run company in charge of the operations said Wednesday, according to state news agency IRNA. Current production in the fields, which straddle the border with Iraq, is 320,000 b/d, according to Touraj Dehghani, managing director of Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEC) or Matn. “Given the West Karun oil fields are shared with Iraq, efforts are made so that production doesn’t stop. But due to environmental considerations, we have shut in 10-12 oil wells that produce around 10,000 to 20,000 barrels of oil on a daily basis,” he said.
