Crude oil futures slid more than 2% in Asia Monday amid growing concerns from developments related to the coronavirus in China. Many Asian markets were closed Monday for the Lunar New Year holiday. At 11:10 am Singapore time (0310 GMT), March ICE Brent futures dropped $1.32/b (2.2%) from Friday’s settle to $59.37/b, while the NYMEX March light sweet crude contract dived $1.29/b (2.4%) to $52.90/b. Chinese health authorities announced Monday that 2,744 confirmed cases of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus, including 461 in critical conditions, had been reported in the country by the end of Sunday, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
