Natural gas snapped a three-week losing streak as traders looked ahead to colder weather, which is expected to boost demand for the heating fuel. Winter is the highest-demand season for natural gas. About half of U.S. households use natural gas as a primary heating fuel. Though forecasts had been calling for moderate temperatures through early November, updated projections are calling for colder weather. Natural gas for December rose 4.6 cents, or 1.2%, to settle Friday at $3.873 a million British thermal units on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices rose 4.5% this week but fell 6% on the month. Natural-gas futures slid steadily for most of October as forecasts for above-normal temperatures muted demand expectations. “The pickup in seasonally colder temperatures in the next week should boost heating demand,” said Barclays analysts in a note Friday.
