Desperate to reverse a noticeable and embarrassing deterioration of the air quality in India’s capital, the government on Friday said it plans to restrict the number of cars allowed on the road on any given day and to close some coal-fired power plants. Starting next month, only cars with license plates ending in even numbers will be allowed to travel the roads on some days and cars with plates ending in odd numbers on others, the Delhi state government said.
