The KRG’s fight against ISIS has been hampered by the low oil price environment. The low oil price environment has put a strain on the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) fight against ISIS, according to the region’s minister of natural resources Ashti Hawrami. “With respect to Kurdistan, the effect of [the low] oil price has been decreased revenue on top of lack of budget support from our colleagues in Baghdad,” the minister said at a recent oil and gas conference in London. As a result, KRG struggled to “adequately fund the fight against IS … and [has] not [been] adequately funded for the wellbeing of almost 2 million … refugees currently residing in Kurdistan,” he added.
