Fishermen in the Venezuelan state of Falcon on Thursday blocked the passage of tankers through Lake Maracaibo’s navigation canal to two of the country’s most important refineries. The fishermen are demanding payment for alleged damage to fishing grounds during the development of a natural gas field in the Cardon IV offshore block by state-owned PDVSA and its partners Eni and Repsol. “Some 2,000 fishing boats have blocked the entry and exit of all oil tankers ,” said one of the leaders of the fishermen’s union, who spoke to S&P Global Platts on the condition of anonymity. The terminals of the Amuay and Cardon refineries currently have 20 tankers loading and discharging cargoes, including crude and refined products destined for national and international markets, according to a PDVSA technical report reviewed by Platts Thursday.
