Kurdish gov't takes stake in Miran gas field from Genel Energy

ANKARA, Turkey, Feb. 24 (UPI) — Turkish energy company Genel Energy said Monday the semiautonomous Kurdish government in Iraq was taking a 25 percent interest in the region’s Miran gas field. Genel said the Kurdistan Regional Government exercised its right to take a stake in Miran production. "Accordingly, Genel’s working and paying interests in the Miran production sharing contract will fall from 100 percent to 75 percent, with the KRG’s working and paying interests at 25 percent," the company said in a statement. No financial terms were disclosed The Miran contract area covers 293 square miles and contains gross resources estimated at 3.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 95 million barrels of oil. Kurdistan has not agreed to export crude via Iraq’s State Oil Marketing Organisation (SOMO), a spokesman for the autonomous region’s government said on Thursday, contradicting earlier comments by a top energy official in Baghdad. Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Hussain al-Shahristani said in a televised interview late on Wednesday that the Kurds had agreed to export through SOMO, which would have removed a major sticking point between them over oil exports. Kurdistan’s prime minister and top energy official travelled to Baghdad earlier this week, intensifying efforts to settle the long-running dispute over exports of oil from the region via a new independent pipeline to Turkey. Iraq’s oil exports dip by 4.8 percent in January

Iraq’s Oil Ministry says crude exports have averaged 2.229 million barrels a day in January, a decrease of nearly 4.8 percent from the previous month. In a statement posted on its website Wednesday afternoon, the ministry also said last month’s revenues stood at $7.074 billion, based on an average price of $102.373 per barrel. December’s oil exports averaged 2.341 million barrels a day, bringing that month’s revenues to $7.470 billion, based on an average price of $102.893 per barrel. The statement quoted the oil minister as blaming bad weather and sabotage attacks by militants for the dip in exports. Iraq holds the world’s fourth largest oil reserves, some 143.1 billion barrels. Car bombings kill at least 33 people in Iraq

Officials say a wave of car bombs in Baghdad and areas to the south has killed at least 33 people. Police say all Tuesday’s attacks were explosives-laden cars parked in or near commercial areas and bus stations. In Baghdad, four such bombings killed at least 17 people and wounded 49 others. They added that four car bombs went off simultaneously in different areas in the southern city of Hillah, killing at least 11 people and wounding 35 others. Hillah is about 60 miles (95 kilometers) south of Baghdad. Outside Hillah in the town of Musayyib, a parked car bomb explosion killed five civilians and wounded 13. Bomb attacks kill at least 24 in Iraq capital

At least 24 people were killed in bomb explosions in the Iraqi capital late on Monday, including blasts near two Shi’ite Muslim mosques and at a busy bus station, police and medics said. No group immediately claimed responsibility for any of the attacks, but Shi’ites are often targeted by Sunni Islamist insurgents who have been regaining ground in Iraq over the past year and overran several towns in recent weeks. In Monday’s deadliest attack, a minibus packed with explosives blew up at a bus station in the mainly Shi’ite district of Ur in northern Baghdad, killing at least 11 people, police and medical sources said.
