Turkish forces continue airstrikes against PKK targets in northern Iraq, southern Turkey

(AFP/File) Turkish military has destroyed 16 positions of PKK in airstrikes in northern Iraq and in Turkey’s southeast Tuesday, Turkish army said Wednesday. According to a statement posted on the Turkish General Staff’s official website, Turkish Air Forces jets bombed PKK positions in Avasin-Basyan region in northern Iraq as well as in Daglica village in Turkey’s southeastern Hakkari province. Several shelters, underground coves and weapon emplacements said to be used by PKK militants were also destroyed in the airstrikes, it said. Meanwhile, four PKK militants were killed during Turkish security forces’ operation in Hakkari’s Yuksekova district. Russia: No political issues with Turkish pipeline

Turkey is the second-largest consumer of Russian natural gas. Gazprom last year surveyed the land route through Turkey for a pipeline dubbed Turkish Stream, a scaled-back version of the South Stream gas pipeline proposed for the region. The Kremlin sent two offers to the Turkish government for consideration on the pipeline project in mid-2015. In August, the government said there was still no word on the project from Ankara. Russia’s Turkish Stream pipeline on hold

Alexander Medvedev , the deputy chairman of Russian natural gas company Gazprom, said the late 2016 launch of the pipeline through Turkey was no longer achievable . "Due to the fact that the installation [of the pipeline] did not begin as planned, we are no longer speaking of December 2016," he said. PKK attack kills soldiers in south-eastern Turkey

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) rebel group said in a statement that it had carried out the attack. Turkish media said Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was calling an emergency security meeting. There has been a surge in violence between the army and the PKK after a ceasefire collapsed in July in the wake of Turkish raids on PKK camps in Iraq. On Sunday, Turkish media said bombs were detonated as two military vehicles were passing in the village of Daglica. The PKK statement said 15 soldiers had died and weapons had been seized, but there was no official confirmation of the toll.
