The secretary general of Venezuela’s opposition coalition denounced a move by the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) to challenge the results of the country’s Dec. 6 legislative elections, El Nacional reported Dec. 29. The opposition National Unity Roundtable (MUD) won a supermajority in the elections, giving it control over the National Assembly and the ability to remove the vice president and Cabinet ministers. Unconfirmed reports have suggested that the government is trying to use the judiciary to invalidate the election of as many as 22 opposition lawmakers , allegedly submitting six legal requests to the Venezuelan Supreme Court.
