Iran is struggling to find enough viable tankers to carry oil exports, Reuters reported April 19. Now free of the economic sanctions imposed by the European Union in 2011 and 2012, Iran has been trying to raise its oil exports and generate more revenue. But many of its ships are being used as storage facilities for unsold oil, and as much as a third of its fleet is not even seaworthy. Meanwhile, foreign ships are still hesitant to take on Iranian cargo. Until the sanctions were lifted, Iran had been relying solely on Asian buyers. Though it now has the opportunity to expand its regional influence using energy and trade deals , the country will need reliable transportation infrastructure to do so.
