The European Union formally recognized Libya’s newly installed Government of National Accord as the country’s sole legitimate government, the Libya Herald reported April 19. The announcement followed an April 18 dinner meeting in Luxembourg attended by EU foreign and defense ministers. In the statement, the European Union called on all armed militias and political bodies inside Libya to acknowledge the authority of the new government. The EU statement also said it is ready to assist the Government of National Accord in a number of sectors, including security and migration, and said that a civilian capacity-building mission could be forthcoming, contingent upon request and approval by the country’s unity government.
