Oilfield equipment supplier National Oilwell Varco (NOV) is laying off 54 workers at its facility in Galena Park, near Houston, according to a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission. In the letter, NOV states that the layoffs will take place between July 18 and July 31. All layoffs are expected to be permanent and laid off employees have no bumping rights. Since the beginning of the industry’s downturn, oil and gas companies all over the world have been forced to reduce their workforces. Globally, the industry has laid off more than 350,000 workers , according to consulting firm Graves & Co. NOV closed a support facility in San Angelo, Texas in January, resulting in the termination of 120 employees. The company’s Norwegian workforce has also suffered during the downturn.
