U.S. airstrikes targeted Islamic State positions in the Libyan city of Sirte for the second straight day on Aug. 2, the press office of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) and a U.S. defense official said, AFP reported. Militias loyal to the GNA have been pushing hard against the Islamic State in Sirte for months now. Speaking at a press conference on Aug. 2, U.S. President Barack Obama said the United States is working with the GNA to make sure the militant group is not able to establish a foothold in the war-torn country. Sustained U.S. airstrikes will greatly aid Libyan ground forces in the fight against the Islamic State.
