Iran had given European countries until July 7 to show that they could help cushion Iran’s economy from the impact of U.S. sanctions. Iran’s announcement Monday came days after two fuel tankers were attacked in the Gulf of Oman. The U.S. and Saudi Arabia have accused Iran of being behind the attacks, allegations that Iran has denied. At a meeting of European Union foreign ministers, diplomats called for an international probe into last week’s attacks. They warned however that if Iran was responsible, it would complicate efforts to preserve the nuclear deal. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, who visited Tehran last week, said Germany is still looking at evidence on whether Iran was responsible for last week’s attacks and said time is needed to establish the full facts.
