Gasoline sales in the U.S. exceeded 2020 levels for the first time this March after a tough year of decreased demand. Same-store sales of U.S. gasoline in gallons for the week ending March 20, 2021, were just over 10 percent higher than 2020 according to an Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) survey by IHS Markit of over 25,000 gas stations countrywide. Brian Norris, executive director of retail fuels at OPIS stated of the change, “The year-on-year increase in fuel demand from March 2020 is certainly welcome news for the recovery of the economy and the beginning of the return to normal life for the American people”. However, a return to pre-pandemic levels of demand still appears a long way off.
