A power plant fired by associated gas from the Sarqala oil field is nearing completion, in a sign that Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is taking practical steps towards reducing the environmentally disastrous practice of gas flaring, while also improving electricity supplies. The 165-megawatt plant, built by British company Aggreko in Garmian, in the southeast of the Kurdistan region, was connected to the power grid on May 1, according to Hazim Karim, the head of Garmian’s Electricity Directorate.
