The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) ordered on Thursday utilities to procure 11.5 gigawatts from zero-emission electricity sources in what it described “a historic decision” aimed at ensuring reliability and the state’s clean energy goals. The commission ordered utilities to procure that amount of new electricity sources, which would come online between 2023 and 2026. All sources should be clean energy sources, such as distributed energy resources (including energy efficiency and demand response), renewables, and zero-emitting sources. “This represents the largest capacity procurement ordered at a single time by the CPUC, and is the largest requiring only clean resources,” the commission said.
